These are pennies known as matapani. Two of them were cut down during the reign of the Venetian doges Raniero Zeno (1252 &#8211; 1268) and Giovanni Soranzo (1312 &#8211; 1328). The third coin has a deposit, which makes it difficult to determine in the rule of which Venetian ruler it was minted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1557\" src=\"https:\/\/pontfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/matapani.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pontfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/matapani-200x133.jpg 200w, https:\/\/pontfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/matapani-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pontfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/matapani-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/pontfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/matapani-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/pontfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/matapani-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/pontfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/matapani-800x533.jpg 800w, https:\/\/pontfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/matapani-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pontfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/matapani-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/pontfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/matapani.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On one side of the coins is Jesus Christ sitting on a throne, and on the other &#8211; St. Mark, the patron saint of Venice, and a Venetian doge holding a flag with a long handle.<br \/>\nThe coins were discovered during the study of a monumental building with a still unclear function, which is located during the current archeological season in Rusokastro. The valuable coins are currently being cleaned in a restoration studio.<\/p>\n<p>The excavations of the medieval town of Rusokastro are led by the Regional Historical Museum &#8211; Burgas, and are funded for another year by the Municipality of Kameno and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Bulgaria.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Valuable Venetian Voins Were Discovered during the Excavations of the Rusokastro Fortress \u00a0 &nbsp; During the excavations of the Rusokastro fortress, three silver Venetian coins were found in very good condition.
